Mount t Elgon is situated on the border of Eastern Uganda and Western Kenya border with the largest and oldest volcano base in East Africa. It covers an area of 1121sq.km. Mt. Elgon was once Africa’s highest volcanic mountain which has reduced to 4231m high with the highest peak called Wagagai. Sipi falls is found within the park with three water falls and it is the starting point to hike Mt. Elgon. The Sipi area is famous for locally grown Bugisu Arabica coffee. Bugisu Arabica grows at an altitude of 1600-1900m.
Mount Elgon has a variety of attractions like the mountain caldera being the main attraction, hot springs, gorge, waterfalls, caves, mammals like buffalo, elephant, small antelopes and duikers are found on the lower slopes as well as forest monkeys, and a home to at least 144 bird species. Higher slopes are protected by the national parks creating an extensive trans-boundary conservation area which has been declared a UNESCO man and biosphere reserve.
