Mgahinga is the smallest national park covering 33.7sq.km located in Kisoro district in south western and one of the two parks that provide habitat for the rare mountain gorillas in Uganda. It is also offers habitat for the endangered golden monkey thus two primates can be tracked.
The park derives its name from “gahinga” a Kinyarwanda word for pile of lava stone heap. It covers three volcanoes Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabyinyo, and Mount Gahinga lying on the Uganda Rwanda border. The park adjoins with Virunga national park in the DRC to the west and with volcanoes national park in Rwanda to the south which together form Virunga conservation area.
The park has a huge cultural significance on the indigenous Batwa pygmy people the first forest people, hunters and fruit gatherers. The park offers a unique Batwa forest experience discovering of a cave and traditional home of the Batwa people complemented by cultural dances in the cave.
